25-03-40: Doncaster Rovers (h) 6-2 (HT 4-1) Crowd (2,400)
Match Report: Yorkshire Post 26th March 1940 A Day of Big Scores Playing together with method and confidence which have been lacking in recent matches, the Leeds United forwards gave a sparkling display against Doncaster Rovers in the return friendly match at Elland Road and won by six goals to two. The improvement was specially marked on the part of Stephenson, who foraged for the ball with fine spirit, and with quick, accurate passes kept his line moving. Hargreaves responded well to this support, while Stephens, in the centre, took his chances very smartly, besides showing many clever touches to make openings for others. It was from a neatly-judged pass up the middle by Stephens that Short opened the scoring. Hargreaves shot the second from a crossfield pass by Powell, and then Stephens scored two, the first a lightning header from Hargreaves' pass. A Lively Wing Doncaster played nice football and Bycroft was a sturdy leader, while Burton showed characteristic enthusiasm in a number of mercurial dashes on the wing, but their only goal in the first half was the result of misjudgment by the Leeds goalkeeper, A. H. Lee. who ran out to a high bouncing ball and failed to reach it. Bycroft lobbing it over his head. The United forwards indulged in entertaining trickery in the second half, and goals were added by Short and Hargreaves, while Beresford, who was Doncaster's best marksman, scored the visitors' second goal. There were 2,400 spectators. |
